Pruning is important to help to keep trees and shrubs healthy and to have a pleasing shape and this time of year, when they are dormant, is an excellent time to do it. The trees and plants that benefit from pruning now are the deciduous ones as they are dormant at this time of year.
A good tip before starting a pruning job is to make sure you have a sharp hand saw or, for larger trees and branches a chain saw. A new crosscut hand saw with a steel blade is inexpensive at around $10 dollars and can make a real difference to the time it takes to get the job done and the aches and pains that you are bound to get afterwards!
For bigger jobs a chain saw will get through the toughest branches in no time. After trimming with the chain saw you can easily mulch them with a gas powered chipper for a good fertiliser for the lawn or garden. Do not use a chain saw however on high branches as it is very dangerous to use a chain saw above shoulder height.
Follow the safety instructions that come with the chain saw. Make sure the blade is oiled and sharp and always wear suitable protective clothing. See your chain saw manufacturers recommendations for gear to wear as it is vitally important for safety.
