Chain Saw Maintenance - Adjusting the Chain Tension

Article brought to you by Stihl and Husqvarna Chain Saws

Chain saws are long lasting and durable if looked after correctly. Regular maintenance will help to keep your chain saw in top condition and give you long lasting and trouble free felling and sawing.

Adjusting the Chain Tension

Safe and effective operation can only be carried out if your chain tension is correct. Too loose and the chain may bind in the wood or come off the bar, too tight and premature wear will occur to both the chain and the blade. The chain needs to be adjusted regularly as it stretches with wear. With a gloved hand check the chain. If it is adjusted correctly it will move easily and smoothly without binding or sagging.

Steps

  1. Find the bar retaining nuts on the side of the saw where the bar is attached to the motor and loosen them.
  2. Find the adjustment screw for the chain tension which is located on the front of the motor housing close to the bar.
  3. Decrease the tension on the chain by turning the screw counterclockwise or increase the tension by turning clockwise.
  4. Make sure the chain is snug against the bar but moves freely and smoothly.
  5. If the chain is still too loose when the screw is turned as far as it will go it’s time to replace the chain.
