Chain Saw Maintenance - Testing the Oiling System

Article brought to you by Stihl and Husqvarna Chain Saws

Chain saws will either use a manual or an automatic chain oiling system. Oil is, of course, essential to keep friction low and prevent heat build up between the bar and the chain. It also lubricates the chain links to allow free movement especially when used at high speeds.

Test the oil system by holding the chain saw over a piece of paper and revving up the saw. For manual oiling systems pump the oil release lever. If the system is working correctly you will see a mist of oil on the paper. If you do not the system is not working correctly and you need to perform the following steps.

  1. Ensure there is oil in the reservoir.
  2. Remove the chain from the bar and check that the passages for the oil on the bar. Clean the bar.
  3. There are oil outlets close to the clutch and sprocket assembly. Sawdust and dirt can clog up these outlets so clean thoroughly.

The above steps should restore the oil system performance. If it still does not work it may be time to take the chain saw to a service centre.
