Chain Saw Maintenance - Checking the Spark Plug

Article brought to you by Stihl and Husqvarna Chain Saws

As in all gas powered motors the spark plug needs to be checked and replaced when worn. Starting will be affected by a worn or dirty spark plug and performance will be erratic. Rather than wait until you are about to start felling or cutting up wood, you can save a lot of frustration by checking the spark plug after about 10 hours of use and replacing at the first signs of wear.

  1. Pull and twist the rubber boot covering the plug to remove the connector. Avoid grasping the wires to remove the plug.
  2. Remove the plug using a spark plug wrench and look at the tip. Carbon deposits will make the tip look black and need to be removed.
  3. Use carburetor cleaner and fine sandpaper to carefully clean the electrode. Use a gapping tool to adjust the gap to your chain saw manufacturers specifications. A worn spark plug will have a rounded electrode and should be replaced.
